Children’s Dentistry

Advanced Children Dentistry, Expertly Delivered

The dental experiences children have in their earliest years shape their attitude to oral health for life. A positive, gentle first dental experience builds confidence, reduces anxiety, and sets the foundation for decades of healthy teeth. We love working with young patients and have built our children’s program around making dental visits something children genuinely look forward to.

Dr. Ruby Gulati is particularly skilled and experienced with younger patients. Her warm, reassuring manner and patience with anxious children makes her one of the most trusted dentists for families across the Goulburn Valley.

What Is Children’s Dentistry?

Children’s dentistry focuses on the oral health and development of young patients from their first tooth through to their teenage years. Our gentle, caring approach helps children feel comfortable and confident at every visit. From routine check-ups and cleanings to preventive treatments and early orthodontic assessments, we provide comprehensive care to support healthy smiles as your child grows.

Who Is This Treatment For?

  • Infants from their first tooth appearance or first birthday
  • Children of all ages for routine preventive care
  • Children with dental anxiety or a difficult previous experience
  • Children requiring fillings, fissure sealants, or extractions
  • Teenagers needing mouthguards, orthodontic assessment, or routine care

Signs You May Need This Treatment

  • First tooth has appeared or child is approaching their first birthday
  • Child has not seen a dentist before or it has been more than six months
  • Parent has noticed a dark spot, hole, or sensitivity in a child’s tooth
  • Child complains of tooth pain or sensitivity
  • Child participates in contact sport and does not have a mouthguard
  • Concerns about bite development, thumb sucking, or dummy use

Comparing Your Options

Preventive First vs Treatment First

Our approach is prevention-first. We focus on education, fluoride, sealants, and hygiene instruction to minimise the need for invasive treatment. When fillings are needed, we complete them as conservatively as possible.

Baby Teeth vs Permanent Teeth

Baby teeth matter — they hold space for permanent teeth, support chewing and speech, and affect a child’s confidence and comfort. Decay in baby teeth causes pain, can spread to permanent teeth, and should be treated rather than dismissed.

Care Designed Around Your Needs

Our Process

What Process We Take During Treatment

Comprehensive dental treatments delivered with care, clarity, and a focus on long-term oral health.

First Visit (1–3 years)

Introduction to the dental environment. Count and check teeth. Fluoride varnish. Parental education on brushing, diet, and dummy use.

Ongoing Preventive Visits

Six-monthly check-ups, scale and clean, fluoride application, monitoring of jaw and bite development, fissure sealants as teeth erupt.

Treatment Appointments

Fillings and extractions when required, completed as gently as possible at the child’s pace. We use tell-show-do and explain every step before proceeding.

Recovery and What to Expect

Most children adapt readily to dental visits when they are handled calmly and without pressure. We never rush or force procedures. Progress at each child’s individual pace builds lasting confidence.

Understanding the Investment

Preventive visits for children are covered under many private health fund policies. Children eligible under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) may receive Medicare-funded dental treatment. We assess CDBS eligibility at your child’s appointment. Speak to our team about applicable benefits.

FAQ

Find the answer to your question

When should my child first visit the dentist?

By their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth appearing. Early visits familiarise children with the dental environment before any treatment is needed.

My child is afraid of the dentist — what should I do?

Tell us when you book. We allow extra time, go at your child's pace, and use our best gentle-approach techniques. Never dismiss the fear — acknowledge it and let us help gradually build their confidence.

Should I clean my baby's teeth?

Yes, from the first tooth. Use a soft infant toothbrush and a smear of low-fluoride toothpaste under age 2, increasing to a pea-sized amount from age 2. Brushing twice daily establishes the habit.

What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)?

The CDBS provides eligible children aged 2–17 with up to $1,132 in Medicare-funded dental benefits over a two-year period. We assess eligibility and bulk bill or partially bulk bill where applicable. Ask our team for details.

When should I get my child's orthodontics assessed?

An early assessment around age 7–8 — when most permanent teeth are emerging — allows us to identify whether early intervention might simplify future orthodontic needs.
