If you have a dental emergency, call us first: (03) 5825 5015.

What Is Emergency Dental Care?

Emergency dental care provides urgent treatment for sudden dental issues such as severe toothache, broken or knocked-out teeth, lost fillings, swelling, or dental infections. Prompt attention is essential to relieve pain, prevent further damage, and save your tooth where possible. Our team is committed to seeing emergency patients as quickly as possible, ensuring fast, effective, and compassionate care.

Comparing Your Options

Dental Emergency vs Hospital Emergency Department

Hospital emergency departments are equipped to manage life-threatening conditions but cannot perform definitive dental treatment such as fillings or root canals. A dental clinic is the appropriate place for most dental emergencies. However, severe swelling, fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or significant uncontrolled bleeding warrant 000 or hospital attendance.

Waiting vs Acting Immediately

Dental emergencies worsen with delay. Infection spreads. Pain intensifies. A knocked-out tooth not reimplanted promptly will be lost permanently. Always call promptly.

Our Process

What Process We Take During Treatment

Comprehensive dental treatments delivered with care, clarity, and a focus on long-term oral health.

When You Call

Tell us you have an emergency. Our team will assess urgency and arrange the earliest available appointment — typically same day.

On Arrival

We focus immediately on three things: alleviating your pain, diagnosing the issue accurately, and providing effective treatment to stabilise the situation.

Follow-Up Care

Once the acute emergency is managed, we plan any necessary follow-up treatment — root canal, permanent crown, or ongoing monitoring as required.

Recovery and What to Expect

Most emergency appointments address immediate pain and stabilise the situation. Follow-up appointments complete definitive treatment. Recovery depends on the treatment provided — we give specific guidance for each situation.

Understanding the Investment

Emergency appointment costs vary by the treatment required. We explain costs before proceeding. Some private health funds provide benefits for emergency dental visits. We provide itemised accounts for fund claiming.

FAQ

Find the answer to your question

Will you always see me the same day?

We make every effort to accommodate emergency patients same day, particularly those in pain. Call as early as possible. We prioritise urgent cases above routine appointments.

I am not a regular patient — can I still come?

Yes. We welcome new patients for emergency care. Please identify yourself as a new emergency patient when calling.

What if I knocked out a baby tooth?

Do not try to reinsert a baby tooth. This can damage the developing permanent tooth. Keep the child calm, apply pressure if needed, and call us to assess.

Is a dental abscess an emergency?

Yes. Dental infections can spread rapidly and become medically serious. Call us immediately if you have facial swelling alongside dental pain.

What if my child swallowed a tooth?

A swallowed tooth typically passes safely through the digestive system. Monitor for any breathing difficulty — if present, call 000. Otherwise, come in so we can assess the situation clinically.
